Development of this baton followed
similar processes that have been used in the development of components for
Aerospace missions. This development process relies first on the
specification of a set of design requirements followed by development of a
specific design that will satisfy the requirements.
The design requirements for this baton
were:
Reduced bounce of the ball and tip so that if it were
dropped, the baton would be closer to the performer.
Improve the ability of the performer to hold on to the
center of the baton, even if the grip area became wet from rain or perspiration.
Develop a design so that if a baton were dropped, it
would not roll far from the performer. ( it is much better to simply bend over
to retrieve a dropped baton than to have to leave formation and run to the other
end of the gym floor.
Design an attractive shape.
